Leopard Features I’m Excited About

Web Clips
There is still alot of content on the web that does not have an XML feed I can subscribe to, Web Clips should solve this issue for me. Currently I’ve been resorting to using Dapper for retrieving content like surf reports and news for the city I live in.

Spaces
As much as I love expose and some of the other functionality of osx for switching applications, I still find my desktop to be a little cluttered sometimes so Spaces will really help out, I’m consistently using my mac for three things, design & development, working on music and generally surfing around, now I can create spaces for all these activities.

Stacks
As much as I try and force my self to keep a clean desktop I have a really hard time with this, I’ve tried using Hazel in the past but had a hard time configuring it properly, eager to try out the Stacks feature and see if it aids me in keeping a clean desktop.

Printable Font Book
I will make time one day to print out my font library to have as a reference so this will be nice.

Movie Previews
No more apple.com/trailers, it will all be there on my desktop.

Tabbed Chat
I really don’t use iChat all that much but this looks like it help alot.

Portuguese (Portugal) Localization
I lost most of my portugese but I have to send props to Apple for finishing this.

PDF Manipulation in Preview
I’ve used the Combine PDFs application alot in the past to create presentations, looks like Leopard will eliminate the need for this application.

Safari Movable Tabs
This is a small detail but not having it can become more annoying than you might think, one of the reasons I love Firefox.

Time Machine
If you’ve ever lost important data there’s no need to go into why this functionality will be so valuable.

No surprise on iPhone’s storage capacity and price

It’s no doubt that the iPhone’s storage capacity and price are a little dissapointing. But I wasn’t surprised at all.

Could the iPhone have been released with more storage? probably, but why would Apple want to cannibalize their own sales, an iPhone with more storage, at a lower price would’ve been so enticing to consumers that it would’ve directly affected sales on the iPod.

My prediction… once sales on the iPod begin to slow dramatically, you’ll see newer iPhone models being released with more storage capacity with lower prices. I would love to know or even get a glimpse at how Apple figures out what products to release, when and at what price, I’m sure it’s a science over there.

Also it will be interesting to see how the iPod’s role in Apple’s product line changes as sales and adoption increase on the iPhone.

Apple in the living room

Apple is basically announcing that they are now entering our living rooms as I write this. It’s been interesting to see Microsoft and Sony battle it out for control of the living room with their gaming consoles (which I think is the wrong way to go) and now Apple is in the  mix. is Apple TV the right strategy? not sure, but it sure does seem like Apple has all the pieces in place to make it happen. It will be interesting to see how everything pans out this year regarding this new product.

iPod Nano

I could probably get some flack for this statement from alot of Apple afficionados, but the latest iPod displayed on the Apple web page seems like it could be a joke, but it’s not.

It looks like one of those mock pages you might see somebody coming up with, poking fun at Apple and the iPod craze. No doubt, the iPod has definetly changed the way we consume music, but this latest offering seems a little silly. If Apple is going to come out with something like this, just come out with new versions of the existing iPod and don’t try and hype it to death or make it seem like “revolutionary” or something. I don’t know, I guess Apple has to keep those profits up so anything to generate a buzz and get some sales going, we all know they’ve definetly mastered that skill.

The iPod nano is a smaller iPod, plain and simple, nothing more nothing less, it’s annoying that they have tried to rebrand it or make it seem like an entirely new product.

On a side note, Apple changed the format on their homepage as well, the product image above the content is now in a 100% width area, I’m wondering if this is something permanent or just temporary for the nano. Also starting to see a shift Apple’s look as they being to turn to darker color schemes. Should be interesting to see if this is going to lead into a new look for OSX.

Video iPod Breaking The Cable Monopoly, Hopefully

One of the main reasons I stopped subscribing to cable television was the inability to pay for the channels that I only wanted to watch. I’ve always disliked the fact that the major cable companies (Comcast, Adelphia, Time-Warner) have had a grip on the content that I wanted to watch.

Now some people think that Apple will be announcing this iPod video device coming up September 7th at the Apple event in San Francisco. I certainly hope this will be the case, because if it is, I think we could finally see somebody giving the cable companies some competition.

My sincere hope would be that current television shows and movies would be available through the Apple video store either on a pay-per download or subscription basis. For a reasonable fee I could log into my Apple account and browse video clips of any currently running show, documentary or movie and have it available for purchase.

I think networks are also really going to love this here’s why. I could be misinformed on this, but I believe one of the reasons HD has taken so long to take off is because the major networks have been afraid to lose their revenues from their syndicated shows currently running on smaller networks. See, the older syndicated shows weren’t filmed in this format and therefore will be obsolete when everything goes HD. Voila! The Apple on-demand video store! All the old shows you used to watch and love, now available on your video iPod.

If Apple is going to start offering up video content downloads through the iTunes store, I would imagine it would happen this way. First music videos and live music performances would be available and then movies and sometime in the near future, and then network shows would be available.

I could be way off base on all of this, but it’s certainly fun to think about the possibilities that could arrive with the advent of a video iPod.

Also, don’t forget about the predictions of the Apple Home Media Center and how it could potentially play into all of this.
