It’s only fitting that the company that is setting out to index the world’s information should be the one that would lead in the information visualization space. As we collect more and more data in our lives we are going to have to start getting creative in terms of how we consume and visualize it. I believe that 2007 is going to be the year when alot of people and companies start thinking hard about the visualization of information. Google is already in this space. Google finance has incredible flash based charting. Reader and Trends are utilizing visualizations, but it would be great to see Google start pushing some visualizations into results and also get more creative in terms of what they are doing with visualizations.
The Pandora meetup was interesting tonight. Alot more people than I would’ve expected on a Tuesday night at this sort of venue. It was interesting to see how many older dedicated fans were in the crowd as well tonight. I expected to see alot more hipsters in the audience but this definitely wasn’t the case.
Some interesting things on the horizon for Pandora, mobile is something they are definitely focusing on and there was some brief discussion on their plans to boost the community features of the service as well. There was also discussion on the recent royalty rate ruling in D.C and the impact it could have on Pandora, from everything that was discussed it looks like Pandora could cease to exist if this ruling sticks. I’m sure Pandora will not be the only one campaigning against this ruling so we’ll see how this all plays out.
I haven’t tried Pizza Fusion, the all natural organic pizza chain that started in Deerfield Beach FL, but word on the streets is that it’s mighty tasty. There’s a location opening in Fort Lauderdale in 2 days.
Brightcove uses video clips to show moving images of their management team, you can browse through them here. It’s little things like this that make browsing experiences memorable.
The UM School of Communications and the Knight Center are bringing down Paul Scrivens from 9Rules and Wisdump to speak March 21st. UM and the people there “get it” and it shows by their recent involvement in Refresh, Barcamp and other initiatives like WeMedia. This will sure to be an interesting talk as Paul has had his hands in alot of projects in the past and is currently building the defacto destination to visit for the best “independant” content on the web with the 9Rules network. If you want more information please join the Refresh Miami group.
Only a nerd would post about their Del.icio.us bookmarks but so what, I’m sure anyone actually reading this might feel my pain.
I’ve come to the point where my Del.icio.us bookmarks are becoming “unuseful” why? I have too many tags that just don’t make sense. I’ll be spending the next few days or whenever I find extra time to see how many tags I can actually delete and/or condense with others to come to some sense of order to my list.
I realize that part of the what makes Del.icio.us and the folksonomy system great is the organic sporatic nature of organizing information but this can sometimes this can be a bad thing. The whole point of “tagging” is to make things useful, so it does help to have a loose system to work with tags in order to make things helpful to you when you search for your information.
If you’re curious to see how it all goes, keep an eye on my list.
Virb, a new social network opened today and if you’re reading this I would implore you to join today. Virb is clearly ahead of myspace in so many ways, design, functionality, etc. But apparently people don’t think so. I think it will only be a matter of time before this network catches on with the masses.
For anyone wondering if there is a “web 2.0″ presence here in South Florida. I would recommend they go check out the “Web 2.0 in South Florida” event this coming Wednesday. While South Florida isn’t a hot bed for tech startups, it is getting better. Hopefully Brian and I will get around to building a directory of companies on the Refresh Miami site one day soon.
